csslr formation
The Committee to Save Silver Lake's Reservoirs was established in 1988 in response to the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power's proposed water quality projects at the Silver Lake Reservoir Complex.
CSSLR joined with the Silver Lake Residents Association (SLRA) and 10 other reservoir communities to create the Coalition to Preserve Open Reservoirs (CPOR).
CPOR participated in a mediation process with the DWP to meet the more stringent State and Federal water quality goals while maintaining or improving the quality of life in reservoir communities.
our goals
CSSLR is dedicated to informing the community about reservoir-related events. It also provides a forum for residents to become involved in decisions affecting the reservoirs through community meetings and workshops held on an as-needed basis. The current focus of the Committee is fourfold:
1. To participate with the Coalition to Preserve Open Reservoirs (CPOR) in formal mediation with the LADWP since 1988;
2. To implement the Silver Lake Master Plan in conjunction with the LADWP and other public and private agencies. The Master Plan provides for the ongoing Silver Lake path improvements and the future opening of the reservoir property for passive recreation use;
3. To monitor the construction of the Silver Lake Reservoir Replacement Project. The bulk of the project will be located off site, adjacent to the Los Angeles River and Griffith Park, but there will be related projects in Silver Lake; and
4. To work with the LADWP, garner feedback from the community, and advise the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council, to help formulate plans for the future use of the reservoir property.
silver lake master plan
The first milestone of the mediation process was the completion of the Silver Lake Master Plan, issued in November 1, 2000. The Master Plan, funded by LADWP, was the end result of multiple community workshops presented by landscape architects Mia Leher & Associates, LADWP, CSSLR, and SLRA. It continues to serve as a long-range planning tool for improvements to the Reservoir Complex, including water quality, landscaping, recreation, pedestrian and traffic safety, as well as funding and implementation.
